Newsletter February 2015

There are at present, 22 women political prisoners in Israeli jails, 20 in Hasharon Prison (Tel Mond), one in Neve Tirza Prison (Ramle) and one in Kishon Detention Center (Jalameh).

Hasharon Prison (Tel Mond)

Prison Conditions

Despite the very cold winter, there is no heating at all in the cells. Not only do the prison authorities not provide heating but they also prevent the women from providing their own . On 18 January 2015 WOFPP's lawyer sent a letter to the prison authorities to permit the prisoners to have heating but no reply has been received. A second letter was sent on 12 February 2015.

The quantity and quality of the blankets that the prison authorities give to the women political prisoners are not sufficient for the winter. For about the last two years the prison authorities have prohibited the prisoners' families from bringing blankets. Thus prisoners are forced to buy blankets in the prison canteen where the prices are much higher and the quality lower.

Transportation to the Courts

The detainees who attend court sessions are still held for long periods in the Prison Service wagon: they are brought to the wagon at about 04:00am then travel to another prison where they wait for hours. It is very cold in the wagon and the prisoners are shackled hand and foot for the duration of the journey. Before and after the court session the prisoners are held in a very cold cell for hours before returning to the prison at night. They are often treated harshly during the transportation process. .

In January the prisoner Yasmin Shaaban complained to the prison authorities the harsh transportation conditions:
1. Shackling hands so tight as to cause injury. Requests to the guards to loosen her shackles were ignored.
2. Requests for adjusting the heating/cooling system were met with aggressive behaviour by the guards. (Shouting).
3. On one occasion she was severely pushed by a guard for no reason.
4. Cooling the wagon instead of heating.
5. Loud music, singing, laughter and other noise at distressingly high volume

Following the complaint, to which there has been no response, the guards no longer talk to her at all which, at least, has ended their shouting!
