There are at present 5 women political prisoners in the Israeli jails: all are held in Hasharon Prison.

Shalit exchange for Palestinian political prisoners

At the second step on 18 December 2011, 550 Palestinian political prisoners were released, among them 6 women. The Palestinian women political prisoners who were not released:



Lina Jarbuni , from Arabeh Bathouf, in the Galilee, was arrested on 15 April 2002.
Wurud Kasem , from Tira in the Triangle, was arrested on 4 October 2006.
Khadija Habash , from Rahat in the Naqab was arrested on 22 January 2009.

Again they suffered a big disappointment at not being released.

Two new prisoner were not released, either:
Salwa Hasan, from Hebron, was arrested on 19 October 2011.
Alaa Juabi, a minor, from Hebron was arrested on 7 December 2011.

Two days before the second step of the exchange, all Palestinian women political prisoner went on a hunger strike, demanding information about the releases.

Released prisoners in Shalit exchange on 18 December 2011:
Suad Nazal , from Qalqilya, was arrested on 23 August 2009.
Mona Qaadan , from Arabeh, Jenin district, was arrested on 31 May 2011.
Bushra elTawil , from elBireh, was arrested on 6 July 2011.
Ranya Halsa , from Bet Hanina, was arrested on 8 September 2011.
Hanya Naser , from Dir Qadis, Ramalla district, was arrested on 12 September 2011.
Fidaa Abu Snina , from Hebron, was arrested on 17 September 2011.

Rejection of an early release

Wurud Kasem, from Tira in the Triangle, was arrested on 4 October 2006. The parole board decided to release her after she had served more then two thirds of her sentence, but the Israeli State Attorney appealed this decision. On 21 November 2011, the district court in Petah Tiqva accepted the appeal and abolished the early release.

New prisoners

Salwa Hasan, 52 years old, from Hebron, was arrested on 19 October 2011. She was brought to wing 2 in Hasharon Prison and held there in separation in harsh conditions without daily recreation. On 17 November she was transferred to the wing where other women political prisoners are being held.

Alaa Juabi, a minor, from Hebron was arrested on 7 December 2011. Her family has asked for permission to visit her, but it usually takes a long time before receiving a reply from the Israeli authorities.

Saja elAlmi , 18 years old, from Bitunya, Ramalla district, was arrested on 9 January 2012.

Released prisoners

Khadija Habash , from Rahat in the Naqab, was arrested on 22 January 2009 and released on 5 January 2012.

Ola Rajub, 23 years old, from Dura, Hebron district, was arrested on 30 November 2011 and released on bail and a deposit of 4000 NIS ($1050) on 6 December 2011. On 2 January 2012, Ola was sentenced to 7 days (the period she had already been in prison) and a fine of 1500 NIS ($390).

Hania elHebal, 62 old year, from Harbata elMusbah, Ramallah district, was arrested from her house on 27 December 2011 and released on bail on 30 December 2011.

Remah elHebal, 30 old year, from Harbata elMusbah, Ramallah district, was arrested from her house on 27 December 2011 and released on bail on 30 December 2011.

Released prisoner

Fatmah Dwabsha, from Duma, Nablus district, 22 years old, a student, was arrested on 20 December 2011 from her house together with her brother. The Israeli occupation forces violently entered the family's house, frightened the children and took away computers and mobile phones. She was held in harsh conditions: a very small cell (so small that she couldn't walk in the cell), it was very cold, and a red light was on 24 hours a day.
Fatmah Dwabsha was released on 5 January 2012.

Released prisoners

Israa Selhab, a journalist from Jerusalem, 26 years old, was arrested on 15 November and was released on 28 November 2011.

Amal Hamamda, 17 years old and Sawsan Hamamda, 21 years old from Hebron district, were arrested on 24 November 2011 when the Israeli occupation forces demolished their family house. Amal was released on bail on 28 Noveber 2011, and Sawsan was released on bail and a deposit of 5000 NIS ($1300) on 1 December 2011.
On 19 December, Sawsan was sentenced to 8 days (the period she had already been in prison) and a fine of 3000 NIS ($780).
