Women's Organization for Political Prisoners (WOFPP)
WOFPP is a group of women united in their opposition to the Israeli occupation. The organization was established in 1988 during the first Intifada (The Palestinians uprising) when Israeli occupation forces arrested more and more Palestinians in their attempt to oppress the uprising.
WOFPP's aim is to support women political prisoners and to promote the release of all political prisoners who have struggled, or are accused of having struggled, against the Israeli occupation and are held in Israeli jails.
WOFPP's support consists of monitoring the conditions of the women political prisoners and resisting policies of suppression that violate their rights.
We seek to address abuses such as:
-
Intimidation, torture and sexual harassment during detention and interrogation.
-
Refusal of the right to consult a lawyer.
-
Lack of proper medical care.
-
Lack of proper conditions in the cells.
-
Holding prisoners in isolation.
-
Harassment in prison.
-
Refusal of mothers' rights to keep infants who are under two years old with them in prison.
-
Refusal of family visits.
-
Refusal of the right to study and lack of professional help in learning.
-
De facto extension of prison terms without trial.
Activities
-
Monitoring the conditions of the women political prisoners in the Israeli jails by lawyers' frequent visits in the prisons.
-
Visiting new detainees in the detention centers: WOFPP sends a lawyer as soon as possible to visit detainees who often endure interrogations, for the purpose of preventing abuse during the interrogations.
-
Keeping track of prisoners' transfers which are often made without the knowledge of either the detainees' families or their lawyers.
-
Mobilizing public opinion through publication of newsletters, press releases, maintaining a website, organizing public meetings and demonstrations, as well as bringing pressure to bear on public institutions, local and international organizations and members of parliaments. We also participate in the activities of other prisoners' support and human rights organizations.
-
Legal activity: WOFPP, together with other human rights organizations, submits prisoners' pleas against conditions and policies that violate their rights.
-
Members of the group observe during prisoners' trials in the court.
-
Trying to supply various items needed to the women political prisoners.
